                                             SECTION -A (Reading)

Q. 1 Read the following passage carefully and answer the

          questions given below:                                                                 [10]

Punctuality is a necessary habit in all public affairs of a civilized society, without it nothing could ever be brought to a conclusion. Everything would be in a state of chaos. Only in a sparsely populated rural community is it possible to disregard it ? In ordinary living there can be some tolerance of unpunctuality. An intellectual who is working on some   difficult problem has everything co-ordinated and organized for the matter in hand. He is therefore, forgiven, if late for the dinner party. It is hard for energetic quick minded, people to waste time so they are often tempted to finish a job before setting out to keep an appointment. If no accidents occur on the way, like punctured tyres, diversion of traffic, and

1204-B                                     page 1 of 9

sudden descent of fog, they will be on time. They are often more industrious useful citizens than those who are never late. The over punctual can as much be a trial to others as the unpunctual. The guest who arrives half an hour too soon is the greatest nuisance. Some friends of my family had this irritating habit. The only thing to do was to ask them to come half an hour later than the other guest. Then they arrived just when we wanted them.

If you are catching a train it is always better to be comfortably early, than even a fraction of a minute too late. Although being early may mean wasting of time, this will be less than if you miss the train and have to wait an hour or so for the next one, and you avoid the frustration of arriving at the very moment when the train is drawing out of the station and being unable to get on it.

Q.2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the

       questions   given below:                                                                [4]

In the modern world women have come to perform varied roles. They are no longer confined to the four walls of their homes. A number of them go out to workplaces to serve as teachers, doctors, nurses, officers, clerks, workers, soldiers etc. There is hardly any field in which women have nothing to do. They work and earn extra money which provides financial security to their families. Not only do they work efficiently at workplaces they manage their homes equally well.

There is no doubt that working women are sometimes left with little time for their husbands and children. Children fail to do well in their studies. Husbands grumble for lack of attention. In such cases women need to cut down their working hours or find out ways and means so

1204-B                                     page 3 of 9

that their families do not feel neglected.

Women, I feel, should work and earn money. Only then can they run their homes better in a competitive world. If their families are co-operative, they also do their duties well, as homemakers.

The first day in the land of apples was a bitter-cold one; for the snow still covered the ground, and the trees were bare. A large bell rang for breakfast, its loud metallic voice crashing through the belfry overhead and into our sensitive ears. The annoying clatter of shoes on bare floors gave us no peace. The constant clash of harsh noises, with an undercurrent of many voices murmuring an unknown tongue, made a bedlam within which I was securely tied. And though my spirit tore itself in struggling for its lost freedom, all was useless.
